The strengths, the challenges

Created 3/5/09 by Wally Schmidt

As I type this, the new administration in Washington DC is hosting a "summit", seeking to reinvent the health system. All we can say for sure, at this point, is that things will change. Of course things have been changing for a long time, moreso in healthcare, probably, than in most other business sectors. So I see hope in the midst of uncertainty for two reasons.

  1. The healthcare industry is accustomed to change.
  2. The core of the north Idaho healthcare industry, the 5 hospitals, are accustomed to talking and working together. This is enormous. They already have a common electronic medical record system. They understand that things will work better if they work together, and based on yesterday's discussion, they're willing, no... eager to include other players such as skilled nursing facilities, practice groups and educational institutions in planning for the future.

I'm so impressed by the energy and spirit I saw expressed yesterday. It really motivates me to try to improve my performance. Thanks to you all!

I'm interested in getting the health care groups feedback on the following article:

From the Huffington Post:

Workforce Development Essential to Obama's Health Care IT Initiative, March 3. Editorial. Note in particular 6th paragraph.

It indicates the demand for 40% more IT staff and professionals in hospitals, not including outside IT providers and support (i.e. INHS).
